Following up on our “Why choose French skincare?” Blog, we thought we’d share how the French skincare philosophy translates into a skincare routine, so let’s get right to it!

Firstly it’s important to remember the mantras:

  1. Quality over quantity
  2. Keep it natural

That means your first step of the routine is probably to declutter your bathroom shelf. The French skincare routine is not as intense or aggressive as the American or Korean skincare routines. Make sure you choose those ingredients carefully, as the idea is to go for fewer products but higher quality. Focus on the core products and the long-term benefits this can have for your skin.

The five simple steps are as follows:

1. Cleanse your face

This is always an essential. Make sure your face is free of dirt to ensure that it can absorb all the goodness from the ingredients that you are using. The French will typically use a micellar water.

Simply put the micellar water on a cotton pad and gently dab it over your face. Do not rinse your face afterwards.

We recommend the Noreva Universal Micellar Cleansing Lotion.

2. Use a toner

This is a very important step as to balance your skin’s PH level. This ensures that your skin’s outer layer, its barrier to the outside world, is functioning properly. It also sets the tone (excuse the pun) for the next steps in the skincare routine to be as effective as possible.

The steps for applying toner are the same as for micellar water.

Simply put the toner on a cotton pad and gently dab it over your face. Do not rinse your face afterwards. Make sure it absorbs into your skin.

3. Apply a serum

This is where it gets personal. We all go through our own skincare issues, there’s nothing to be ashamed about! Embrace your flawed skin, understand it and treat it. Serums are full of nutrients that make your skin glow and address whatever issues you may be facing, be it pigmentation, acne, wrinkles etc.

Apply your own serum as soon as the toner has absorbed into your skin.

Dab the serum onto your face and let it absorb. Do not rub it in as if it were a cream.

We recommend the Noreva Trio White XP Anti-Dark Spot Serum for any pigmentation needs.

4. Moisturise!

It wouldn’t be a skincare routine without it.  Moisturising is possibly the most important step in the routine as moisture loss can possibly cause fine lines or even deep wrinkles. This product is also specific to your skin and its condition. We would also recommend having two different moisturisers. One for the day (containing SPF) and one for the nighttime. The French also tend to change the moisturiser they use according to the season, using a richer cream during winter and a lighter cream during summer.

5. Treat yourself with a face mask

What is more relaxing than using a face mask? Face masks give additional help towards addressing any specific skin issues you may have as well as removing excess oil and hydrating the skin. Again, it is important to know your specific skin type and match it with the corresponding product. Make sure to be gentle, as the French way is not to scrub away every last skin cell.  Exfoliating too often can cause damage to your skin’s outer layer. Therefore it is important to choose your products well and not to overdo it.
